BARRAMUNDI FISHING

LAKE MONDURAN

Monduran Dam

Located approximately 20klms from the Town of Gin Gin, Monduran dam is a remarkable impoundment which presents many different challenges to the barra angler.

A huge body of water, Monduran dam is an impressive waterway which offers superb barra fishing 365 days a year.

The waterway travels over 30klms upstream from the dam wall, an open basin with weed fringes greets you and as you travel up stream the landscape changes to a maze of flooded forests and submerged timber.

Barramundi by nature are a structure orientated fish, and it’s these flooded forests that many huge Barramundi call home. Are you up to the challenge of heart in the mouth barra fishing in dense timber forests?

Being the fifth largest dam in Australia, Monduran dam can be a daunting waterway, much of its habitat looks the same, and lots of water makes for some hard decisions on where to start.

Choosing a guided trip with Jason will fast track your knowledge, and give you the skills necessary to turn up next time with a plan which will enable you to find fish and target them successfully.

Currently in excess of 100,000 Barra fingerlings are stocked into Monduran Dam per year, already boosting the existing an impressive amount of fish that have been stocked since the late 90’s.

In 1997 the Monduran Anglers and Stocking Group (MASA) was formed and through the dedication and hard work of both past and present members, Monduran Dam is now at the top of the impoundment Barra scene. Its relative closeness to Brisbane metropolitan means that you can drive from Brisbane to Monduran, fish, and be home the same day.

A charter on Monduran will teach you how to find Barra, what types of habitat it prefers and why, tactics when fishing in heavy cover, what lures will lead to success and techniques that will have you catching barra when others struggle. There is a vast array of tactics and methods that are extremely successful on Monduran.

If you fly to Bundaberg we can organise airport pick up with our courtesy bus and arrange accomodation at one of our local motels or you can stay with us in our in our local hotel and enjoy some of the best meals in SE Queensland. We have a permanent Chef who can arrange your meals personally.Take advantage of our value added pakages which include all meals, accomodation, airport pick up and charter.

Barramundi

The mighty barramundi is without doubt one of Australia 's premier sportfish. It is known to have a lifespan of 25+ years in the natural environment and can reach 1.8 metres in length and 60+ kgs.

Wild, local saltwater fish have been purchased and transported to Monduran Dam by our local stocking group MASSA.

The fingerlings are then released into the Monduran catchment and left to fend for themselves. This stocking is at a rate of 250,000 fingerlings per annum.

Roughly 30 percent of those fingerlings will go on to survive, meaning incredible numbers of barra roam in the depths and among the snags at Lake Monduran.

An abundant food source combined with optimum weather conditions see the fingerlings grow at a staggering rate, tagging data suggests that once they reach 12 months of age the fish then go on to put on an average of 3.5kg per year.

Barramundi as young as 4 years old (average is five) can reach the magic metre mark once this milestone is reached the fish tend to take on a classic “impoundment” look, with broad shoulders, a scooped head and chunky flanks.

Much like their saltwater cousins, impoundment barra fight hard and fast, with lightening turns of speed and impressive aerial displays. They are a fantastic fighting species and incorporate fast running spurts of power, head shaking and often clear the water a number of times before coming to the net.

There are many misconceptions amongst the fishing fraternity regarding these fish but make no mistake impoundment barra are an incredible challenge, fight like mad and will test your skills.

Are you up to the challenge?

THE FISHING

One of the great benefits of impoundment barra fishing is that these fish can be caught every day of the year, not just the warmer months.

Yes, this includes winter time and often winter impoundment barra fishing can be the best fishing you will ever experience. The Lake Monduran experience is available 365 days per year.

The weather in Central Queensland through the winter months is generally the best time of year as far as stability is concerned. Ambient air temps in the mid 20’s are the norm, clear skies and light winds provide a spectacular, clear blue sky days on end. In short, its awesome weather and the fishing can be sensational!

There are some important factors at play during the winter months, your guide will pass on valuable knowledge on your charter, explain what it is to look for, and also detail why the fish are there.

It’s not just about fishing shallow water; there is lots of shallow water on the fringes of Lake a and Lake Monduran. You could fish these area’s all day but if those important elements are not right you could fish there all week without a hook up. Trained eyes can find these areas quickly and adapt to the current conditions. This is where your guide’s experience is all important.

Sometimes the best winter fishing can occur in deeper water because that is where those factors have aligned and have made great conditions for barra to feed.

Lake Moduran is the jewel on the Coral Coast of Queensland. This is one place that you can catch barramundi both night and day 365 days a year.
